Information Architecture vs. Interaction Design

I

While sometimes, people tend to think that there is not a very big difference between Information Architecture and Interaction Design, there is still a clear distinction between them.

As the name suggests, Information Architecture is the overall structure of the contents. It serves as a tool for indicating how they are arranged. It is simply a visual representation of product infrastructure, features, and hierarchy. Information Architecture is not a part of the actual interface, but it plays a critical role in the users’ experience with a digital product nonetheless. That said, the responsibilities of an Information Architect lie in analyzing data, organizing and developing the overall structure of a product.

Interaction Design, on the other hand, emphasizes more on behavior. It is about how users interact with the product and achieve their goals. The responsibility of a UX designer is to improve a user’s overall experience wiht the product by creating seamless and intuitive interactions, they are more concerned with the functions and manipulations of the product (front-end), rather than the structure behind it (back-end).
