The system of Pace Layers provide our design community the balance in the design materials, tools, and technology and spread awareness to not disturb each other’s layer. In interaction design, design elements and method like GUI and 3D UI are upper layer, while programming tools like CUI is lower layer. In my opinion, involvement of generative AI should be treated as one of the upper layers, and it could be the good example to explain why layers shouldn’t disturb each other’s pace. When ChatGPT was released in public, all the industries and communities, including design field tried to adapt to the pace of ChatGPT. As we can see, we find more advertisement of AI service companies on San Francisco’s billboard, meaning that release of ChatGPT is affecting its own pace layer as well. Today, many business and education department is incorporating AI in their field, causing circumstances like layoff and job replacement by AI. This is almost that pace layer of AI is forcing and dominating other field of pace layer, rather than other layers choose to adapt. While the layer of interaction design seem to be having some positive feedback from the layer of AI, it is not as we think in the background. In a particular example of interaction design field, pace layer for programming is disturbed by the layer of AI, allowing anyone to be able to program without having to learn programming languages. To prevent the negative effect from pace layers in general, I believe that we need some sort of regulation like law enforcement between the layers.
