How has the graphical user interface changed since the early Macintosh / Windows days? What has stayed the same? What needs to be improved now that technology has improved?

Graphical user interface has been improved since the era of early Mac and Windows by fixing many design aspects. For example, UI design team like Virginia Howlett worked on improving color and visual hierarchy by recoloring the scrolling bar in windows 3.0, Apple collaborated with Microsoft and created Times New Roman font, Microsofts’ designers and advocates like Albert Shum, Bill Buxton, Bill Flora introduced motion graphic, simplified flat design, and focused on accessibility for graphical user interfaces.

Meanwhile, the style of original icon of “file” on desktops haven’t change! Other than that, the concept of direct manipulation such as drag and drop and menu bar, the way that designers hold user testings to improve their work remains the same.

In my opinion, by adding collaborative features with AI and inclusion of Natural user interfaces can improve work efficiency of users by shortcutting user tasks and capturing users’ task patterns to predict next behaviors. I feel that as technology improves, users’ capacity to work with new features increase. It’s time to move on from GUIs!
