What caused the transition from Web design to User Experience Design?

In my understanding, the web design used to be more programmer and graphic design based in early day. People barely knew how to use them and had access to them back then so website was more for big companies and the web design job was not really recognized as a real job. As time goes by and internet develops, the amount of users increased and websites became a place for business to appeal their product and service, and even a regular users can make website for any purposes, like making a blog and introducing knowledges. As websites became more profit based and more focused on satisfaction of visitors, the title of Web Design started to change into User Experience design, solving problem from users’ interaction within the design of website, such as size, location, color of UIs and user flow overall. In short, website design is more about functionality using programming and design in bigger pixel sizes, and User Experience Design is more about profit and satisfaction of users through smooth user flow and guiding UIs.
