I took a bit of a different direction and drew the PDA to look like it came out of Back to the Future (the movie). I also made it that off-yellow color like it was a 90’s computer. I figure if its for war it won’t look as polished.

Bhavsar_The Mother of All Demos
Douglas Engelbart and the team from Stanford are credited as early computer pioneers, and it is incredibly fascinating to see what their initial visions were. Many of the functions of computers we take for granted today, such as the “tracking spot” or mouse, hyperlink, zooming function, and bulleted lists, were revolutionary during this time. Moreover,…

From Man-machines to Laptops
Nowadays the idea of devices for example computers, cell phones, or laptops are all aiming for bringing efficiency in our life. Those devices are developed in the way that it’s easy to access and able to bring along during travels. In the very beginning stage of such machines, (often called man-machine) they are very large…
From Mother of All demos to interaction design
In the video, I was so impressed by the prototype made by Doug Engelbart. Some of the key features of the prototype had a great influence on today’s interaction design. GUI, micro-interaction, user feedbacks, information architecture… All of these ideas were presented by Engelbart with his prototype. The interface allows people to interact with the…

Thinking about design optimization from prototype
When I saw Douglass Englebart’s prototype of the keyboard and mouse concept about 50 years ago, I realized why it was called “the mother of all demos”. Before that, designers did not present concepts in a visual, physical and interactive way. The concept of prototyping really opened a new door for later design, especially interaction…
Symbiosis Between us and tech
From the article Man-Computer Symbiosis (1960), the author J.C.R. Licklider mentioned the importance of the Computer-Posted Wall Display. He said that some information must be presented simultaneously to all the men, preferably on a common grid, to coordinate their actions. Nowadays online collaboration becomes more and more important and necessary, especially when COVID-19 happened. The…
Modern computers and J.C.R. Licklider’s analysis of the relationship between humans and computers
This article by Licklider covers thinking about the relationship between humans and computers in the future. He proposed the definition of “symbiosis” between humans and computers and analyzed in detail the prerequisites for achieving human-computer symbiosis. This article is important because it analyzes the various problems that exist in the interaction between humans and computers….
A Computer Revolution: Mother of All Demos
Among the major achievements of the scientific and technological revolution, the most well-known is the computer close to our lives. We are now familiar with all kinds of personal computers, laptops, and smartphones, but when the concept of “computer” was born, they did not have so many features that are easy for humans to understand…
First Prototype-The Mother of All Demos
Tell the truth, it took me a while to figure out how the first demo of the computer that Doug Engelbart presented. Using the control panel which combined with the keyboard and mouse, Engelbart showed us the series of actions for sorting and organizing the shopping list (See the screenshot above). Although it took me…

Understanding Human-Machine Symbiosis
In a time where technology often seems to be an extension of our bodies, it is of great importance that we as designers understand what happens between the human and the machine, as well as what comes of it. To understand the relationship, or the “in between”, we must first consider the role each character…
