April Greiman is a designer in America. She was born on March 22,1948, and grew up in New York City. Her father was an early computer programmer, systems analyst, and founder and president of The Ventura Institute of Technology. This laid the foundation for her to be widely regarded as one of the earliest designers who accepted computer technology as a design tool. April Greiman graduated from Kansas City Art Institute. After graduation, Greiman began to work as a freelance designer, and directly cooperated with the design director of new york Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). She led her first design studio, April Greiman, Inc., from 1978 to 2004.
In 1982, Greiman became head of the design department at the California Institute of the Arts, also known as Cal Arts. The school’s computer equipment has opened up more possibilities for her, allowing her to mix printed materials, videos and fonts into multiple layers. April Greiman uses a different words to describe her work: “mixed images”, “cross-media” and “visual communication”, but she never called it “graphic design”. She thinks that graphic design is closely related to printing, but her work are mixed with elements from different media. Greiman thinks that the focus of its design is space, not pages. Her style includes typesetting, layering, and floating in space with other “space objects” (such as shapes, photos, illustrations and palettes). She created a deep space and dynamic design. Greiman is fascinated by exploring new ideas and creating new things.
It must be admitted that Greiman led the development of new formats and new trends of graphic design at the end of the 20th century. The world is changing, and so is Greiman. Recently, she devoted herself to webpage design, brand design, logo design and public art, and provided consulting on color, finish and material for some construction projects. She always believed that there will always be new solutions to everything.

It’s nice that you include the her definition of her work, which is not graphic design. I think a great lesson to learn from since there are a ton of designers out there. We all need something unique to us.
Its super interesting to read about her beliefs about graphic design!
