When it comes to human politics and design, we have to mention Dana Chisnell. She is a pioneer and thought leader in civic design, bringing deep experience to that space.
Dana was named one of the world’s most influential people in digital government by Apolitical in 2019. Shed teaches a field course on design in government at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in the Masters level Democracy, Politics, and Institutions program. She also taught a course on design in elections that is part of the Election Academy at the University of Minnesota – the first university program to professionalize election administration.
As the leader of civic design in the United States, Dana brings professional design practices to thousands of election officials every year, including how to improve votes, voter guides, websites and other election materials to ensure the will of voters. She worked on the Anywhere Ballot, a ballot marking interface tested for accessibility by people with cognitive disabilities and low literacy. She also produced field guides for election officials around the country to create better voting experiences for a diverse public.

Dana also works on human and social issues. For example, this year, she and her team made a story-driven experience research on extensive employment, focusing on the unemployment problem in the United States under the epidemic situation. As Dana said, “I think a lot about how design affects the world. And for a long time, I’ve been thinking about and studying how focusing on one user doesn’t always produce the outcomes we want. Humans are social creatures. We have relationships. Those relationships don’t fade or disappear when we’re interacting with a designed thing. They’re still present as influences.” Design for society, which inspires each interaction designer.

“Democracy is a design problem”. Interesting! Thank you for your sharing that!
Nice pick and new side of the design rather than screen and visual designer, especially for next week election. I’d love to see some of her work to see what her design style and taste like.
