Kim Goodwin is the author of the bestselling book, Designing for the Digital Age. Kim helps clients build their own product and design competencies and cultures, both through organizational consulting and through leading highly collaborative research, product strategy, and design engagements. You may also know Kim from her previous work as Vice-President, Design and General Manager at Cooper, leading an integrated practice of interaction, visual, and industrial designers and the development of the acclaimed Cooper U design curriculum. More recently, Kim served as VP of Product & UX for PatientsLikeMe.
I like what she said,”I realized that it’s not about just doing great design; that’s maybe half the problem. I think that’s actually less than half the problem. It’s more about whether the organization is equipped not just in practice, but in values, to deliver a great user experience. It’s so much more than just what you put in the pixels.” I think as an interaction designer, the designer’s job is to find the problem and solve it. This is our duty. But we should create a better place in this world. We must make machines work better for humans, not only to solve problems but also to provide a good user experience.
I remember when I was in my sophomore year, in the research class, I was doing a “secondary research” project. I saw Kim Goodwin’s words, in a project, she doesn’t spend a lot of time investigating, but we must always consider the interests of stakeholders and show the value of the product through investigations. Research is only used to communicate the direction and ideas of the product with your stakeholders. However, these are things that you will only do when you enter work. In the past, I always wanted to solve problems through investigations, but now I know that I must also consider the interests, analyze the interests through the business map, and maximize the interests of stakeholders.
