QUOTES BY ZUZANA LICKO | A-Z Quotes

Zuzana Licko is a type designer and one of the first designers to use the Mackintosh computer. Zuzana Licko was born in 1961 in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, and emigrated with her parents to the U.S. in 1968. She graduated with a degree in Graphic Communications from the University of California at Berkeley in 1984. Licko’s father was a biomathematician and at the University of California, San Francisco. Through his job, she became involved with computers during the summer months, helping him with data processing work. The first font she created was designed in the Greek alphabet for her father.

She founded the design team Emigre Design with her husband, Rudy VanderLans. They produced the critically acclaimed Emigre journal, which included Licko’s digital typeface designs. In 1984 in San Francisco, California, United States was where it was first published. Emigre was one of the first publications to use Macintosh computers and had a large influence on graphic designers moving into desktop publishing.

About her typography style, she admiration the Didone serif typeface Bodoni – Bodoni is the name given to the serif typefaces first designed by Giambattista Bodoni (1740–1813) in the late eighteenth century. Led her to design and several variations of Bodoni, in the form of the digital font for computer type, and some forms were also used for text. Bodoni influenced Licko’s work on Filosofia, one of her typefaces. Like other revivals of typefaces, Licko’s revival of Bodoni focused on geometry and symmetry. She also incorporated details like a slightly rounded serif. Licko’s Filosofia was designed to be modified for use either in print or on a computer. There is a “Regular” version of the Filosofia family, which is intended to be used in print. To create Filosofia, Licko studied different styles of Bodoni, including the original print work and recent revivals, such as ITC Bodoni.
