The Evolution of Online Community

“Information on the WELL was not merely an object of exchange, but a representation of its creator’s consciousness.” The early concept of an online community opens up a space for the internet not just as a tool, but also as an extension of people’s offline connection.

Nowadays the social apps hold way more than as it was imagined in the early days. Because of the development of mobile devices and Web 2.0, the idea of online community evolved to a point that it completely substitutes our off-line, face-to-face connections. Some people’s whole social connections rely on the internet.

However, even hypertext breaks out the limitation of linear information processing, does it mean people are exploring the current cyberspace out of their own will? The invention of Search Engine Optimization indicates that, even though we have the links that connect information, someone is having control over what’s being presented to you. They are in control of where you need to click, what content you are seeing. As people are isolated by their information safe zone, cyber hates and polarization emerged more than ever. Is AI & content algorithm harming the future of online community? The answer is yet to debate.

  1. Love the color palette and the clean style! Also, the layout really leads readers’ eyes to the main points.

  2. “Is AI & content algorithm harming the future of online community? ” – yeah I definitely think a lot of designers are awaring of this ethical issue and I am glad you brought that up.
