Christopher Alexander patterns – similarities and differences

Work Community to Slack

First of all, tech companies tend to be decentralized, which makes it easier to communicate, connect and work within team. Christopher Community of 7000 pointed out the similar pattern was decentralize and close proximity of the work space. The visible location – by being visible makes it easier to reach out and start a conversation with. This is what’s happening in tech industry or Slack or Facebook. The office space has no wall separation and cluster enough for the team to be able work as a team and an individual. Self-governor is important in the work place, where a person has been trusted with the job and expected to happen as describe by Christoper. The self-governor in tech companies are similar in their regard. For example, there is no specific time-in and time-out for employees. The only thing is important is the end result.

Degree of Publicness

Privacy has always been an issue, although Christopher depicted it in the domino effect, where one thing lead to another. I think that is happening with social media, where the creation of itself is the problem to the society. For instance, Facebook provides connection to one another, but at the same at the expense of one’s privacy.

Common Areas

This is another pattern that I would say it is pretty much the same for the 21st century common areas. They serve as a path for people to walk through or pass by. Common Areas provide a more relaxing environment for employees to have a conversation. It won’t awkward to join a conversation, if another employee happens to pass by.
