Humane Communication

Christopher Alexander presented case studies of human patterns.

Degrees of Publicness claim to make a clear definition between three different kinds of people: extrovert, intermediate, and introvert by explaining planning houses placement. Facebook has a setting to make one’s profile visible to people. In the Friends tab, Facebook suggests people a user may know, accompanied by two responses: Add Friend and Remove. Through Homescreen, people can view the recommendation based on their behavior. Post tab with a quote: What’s on your mind allows extrovert people to participate crowd. For similar interest which people have, Facebook offers group. This group, similar to the housing plan that placed an equal proportion of three kinds of households, has different personalities: extrovert, intermediate, introvert, join the group and form a community.

Work Community emphasizes the formation of work communities, supported by a common courtyard where people gather. Slack has a community(workspace) that allows them to form an agglomerated group. Then it has subgroups in a community: channels that are identified in a different purpose.  Class chat has roughly 14 overall, which fits as a workplace according to Work Community. Common land in General discussion channel allows us to participate in workshops and receive news.

Pages about Small Work Groups suggest splitting institutions into small identifiable workspaces with six people while supporting communication through common facilities. The small groups will reduce the discomfort of being watched all the time in a large office. I felt this idea resembles the breakout rooms on zoom. Working in small groups gives me less worry about the audience and focuses on presenting my concept or work.

Community of 7000 claims to give the local community power to decide the affairs affect their daily lives. This case made me consider the demonstration happening in Seoul. There are iconic political places such as the Blue House where President resides, and Capitol where politicians discuss affairs. However, people demonstrate their voice and action at Gwanghwamun, a historic palace, and nearby plaza with a statue of Lee Soon-shin, a heroic Admiral. People’s behavior may be derived from the citizens’ recognition as the palace and plaza are located in the realm of their daily lives. Online community websites such as Reddit could be a case in which individuals voice their interest and share thoughts on threads.

  1. It is really interesting to hear about the example in Seoul. I would love to see these locations in person one day!

  2. I like that you listed four different examples to correspond to Alexander’s spatial planning. This gave me a quick understanding of what I didn’t read.

  3. the breakout room in zoom is definitely a good example of “small work groups”. I almost forgot this feature
