High Stakes in Oregon Trail

I think Oregon Trail was so popular because of its innate ability to bring players into a world that has stakes, and out of the reality they live in. Being an adventure game, players want to do well. There is an instant connection they have to their player and in turn they will make decisions based on the welfare of that player. This game also gives players the illusion of choice. I think this aspect of choosing your own path is very important as it allows the player to feel in control when playing the game. It also allows the player to get an entire different experience if they play again. All of this makes Oregon Trail an engaging game with high stakes, attracting early computer users and setting the tone for the future of adventure gaming.

  1. I agree on the first person perspective power! It makes me think of today’s RPG games.

  2. I also think the power of choice makes this game appealing. Being able to decide your pace, amount of food and other supplies you purchase really engages the player to do what it takes to make it through and survive.
