Tracing the evolution of GUI: there and back again

GUI stands for the graphic user interface which build direct connections between the computer hardware and the user. The history of GUI can be retrospect to the early 1980s.The Xerox Star was the first system that installed GUI in its desktop through a visualized way includes – the icon of the folder, the window and other functional symbols.

Then Apple released its Lisa office system 1 in 1983 which inspired from Xerox Star’s GUI design. And computer companies start released their systems – such as, Macintosh system 1.0(1984), Amiga workbench 1.0(1985), Windows 1.0 (1985). And in 1990s, computer companies kept optimized their systems, but some of the layer remains the same, for example, the symbols of windows and folders did not change, and the color layer are mostly grey and dark blue. However, in 2000, there are more color layer in the bigger screens, the faster systems based on the faster processer. With the refinement of the screen, icons become more simplified and elegant. If we compare the Macintosh system (2018) to the original 1.0 version in 1984, the trash can and the window layer stays the same, but the visual style changed into a more artistic way.

In order to engaging user experiences, companies need to optimize their desktop on the foundation of solid interface design. For example, the icons and format should be simplified for user-friendly functions. At the meanwhile, the consideration of an efficient interface based on the fundamental design concepts is also an inevitable aspect. With the development of mobile devices, the GUI design in those remote devices has become more important. For example, Apple is kept optimize its interface on iPhone including the formatting content, touch controls, hit targets, text size, contrast, spacing, high resolution, distortion, organization, alignment, and design resources (1). When Apple updated its iOS system, it brings new functions with simplified icons, convenient operations, and fixed bugs from a former version of the system. The mobile devices are not limited to the iPhone, but also the iPad and Apple watch. Compare to the smaller screen size with the Apple watch, the GUI design in it might get refined with the consideration of accuracy when the user calling an App on the device. Under the development of technology, the functional layer in the interface might be modified based on the request of fluency and art. With regard to an excellent system, it must ensure that all the needs are covered comprehensively.
