Connections between Renaissance & Movable Type and Design

Renaissance is a French word that means ”rebirth.” Increasing interaction between different cultures is one of the major causes. It’s clear to see how Christianity and feudalism influenced each other when the Silk Road was opened. With the exchange of goods, people from different cultures learned from each other. Designers should be careful when designing, especially the project within various cultures. Some patterns, symbols, and colors may have significantly different meanings. Do the background check ahead of time will avoid unnecessary mistakes.

Also, cultures collide and the new term will be born. Asians would use techniques learned from Europeans. Europeans advanced movable type, which is a huge step to improve printmaking technology. Nowadays, it’s important to learn from others. Each designer has a unique background and experience which helps their design thinking. Together learning will lead designers to step forward faster.

  1. You start to get into a really interesting analysis about cross cultural design and how the seeds started with the Silk Road and moveable type. I’d love to see you dig into this further and get into WHY it’s important to learn from these influences as they move across cultures.

  2. Beautiful thinking behind cultural differences and these historical events bridge them together. It would be even better if there’s any visual sample that shows how symbols or other visual languages were used in this era and how the connection fuses these cultures, which eventually develop their own paths under the influence of each other.

  3. it is interesting to hear the point that designer should care about the cultural aspect, and i agree with you. it is also important to learn from different cultures and think differently.

  4. I definitely agree with your statement that specific symbols and colors may have different meanings when used in different cultures. For example, Japan uses red lights only for emergency vehicles like the police, fire department and ambulances while here in the U.S., red and blue is used. These cultural differences need to be considered when designing for various cultures internationally.
