The understanding of movable type as well as the era of the Renaissance is important because it is the foundation of all design languages. We take for granted the fact that current day design aspects are due in part to old practices of designing. Without movable type, the way of printing and information would not exist. Knowing about the past and how it benefits the future is important to lay more building blocks to continue innovating and improve design.
During the Renaissance, so many talented and influential artists were discovered. Because of them, techniques and forms of how to convey information were discovered. Leonardo da Vinci is widely known for his work as a painter and sculptor. But his impact to the fields of architecture, engineering, and science are extremely useful today. Without knowing about the past and the accomplishments leading up to present day, we would be unable to create that same impact ourselves.
I think the point that you claim about the moveable type and how it affects history is really clear and easy to understand.
I agree with your thoughts on moveable type but you don’t express WHY it’s important to understand it’s impact on culture and society. Information would still exist but it would move much slower and be less accurate as the previous methods of hand creation and oral storytelling are bound by human limitations.
Good summary – I would encourage you to also think about, what factors might inspire Da Vinci as he masters in so many other fields? Also, how do Da Vinci’s legacies influence the current days besides typography? There are many other elements that can be borrowed for modern interaction design.
