Trace Back & Think

People always say that “you must learn to walk before you run.” If we are not learning the basics, how are we supposed to strengthen our designs? As a student of interaction major, it is very important for me to learn the basic background of Renaissance and moveable type to become a professional. As we all work hard to become professional designers, we need to acquire more creativity or explore more ways to acquire creativity. Creativity does not come from nowhere; a lot of time, our creativity actually comes from other people’s works. If we look back at the works and inventions that are created a long time ago, we may get inspiration from them. We can always think of questions like how they function, why they were designed in this way but not in other ways, why people created them, why they were effective, and what are their flaws. And we can always learn something beneficial from them, those works and inventions became impactful around the world for reasons. After that, we can bring those questions into our works and make some experiments to push our ideas forward. Learning from the past is always a good idea for self-improvement and a good way to acquire creativity.

  1. I agree with you. We definitely can get inspiration and learn from the past, especially at the prime time of invention like the Renaissance.
