Reflection on Bauhuas Philosophy

It is unprecedented that Bauhaus philosophy tends to combine the aesthetics and everyday function. One of the principles Bauhaus strives for is that function before form. It underlies the importance of functionality and can be related to the principles of interaction designs. For modern interaction designers, we mean to create products that help the users accomplish their objectives in a better way. As a result, the functional requirements are always taken into consideration for what purpose it is designed and created. What outstanding to me the most is the distinctions between artists and artisans, which are mentioned in the Bauhuas philosophy. “The artist is an exalted craftsman”. From my perspective, the artists lean to focus on the individual artistic spirits, while the artisans lean to focus on the functions and public values. As such, what is a designer? What is an interaction designer? A conservative artist or an exalted workman? Interestingly, It inspires me to rethink what kind of role I am supposed to be in the field of design.

    1. Thanks for pointing out! It’s kind of similar. I interpret “public values” for artisans as a measure of creating wide-ranging, common, and accessible goods.

  1. i like the piece you made. i guess as interaction designers, the ultimate goal for us is to solve problems to make the world a better place.
