- Go in with good intentions. Do not design to exploit peoples’ wallets.
- Find the real problems someone faces instead of jumping to the palliative solution.
- Realize that not everyone wants the same things as you do in a product and cater to who you’re creating for.
- Always consider accessibility and inclusivity within your work.
- Only solicit relevant user data and remember that privacy is a basic human right.
- Consider the materials you use and how they impact the environment. Strive to create sustainable products.
- Test, test, test. Potentially life-threatening malfunctions must be avoided.
- Don’t be married to your first idea. If the idea fails, keep trying.
The philosophy of my manifesto is essentially to stay ethical within your design process and decisions as well as to stay focused on your goals. Technology has incredibly huge impacts on us, whether we see it overtly or not, and since we are aware of this information, we must act accordingly. Our decisions have weight, so it is imperative to think through all the aspects of your work, as they can have destructive, unforeseen consequences if not caught. My manifesto attempts to break down and address the various factors that cultivate ethical design.
These are some brief but powerful words! They are very moral and practical:)
Rephrase some of these to be about you. This is your manifesto and should be about your approach and philosophy. In some cases all you need to add is “I will…” or change “your” to “my”.
