Ethics in Social Media

For the past year, I’ve been contemplating my future role and job as a designer in this field of work. No matter what job I am in or what company employs me, I want to be sure that ethics is a large inclusion as well as to make sure the final goal is realized. The age of technology has greatly impacted us as a society. The topic of ethical technology was on my mind a few years back and has been a slight interest of mine. Ever since the Netflix documentary, “The Social Dilemma,” I’ve been thinking about how large of an impact technology has affected day to day life. Companies are businesses. The main goal at the end of the day is to earn money and profit. Social media platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram all seek the attention of the user. They want you to continue to be flooded with new information and refresh the page. Their design formula is the opposite of ethical because it encourages the cycle of online social media use to continue. To make this change happen, I want to change the format of how you are given info on social media. I want to put in parameters to make it so that you are able to have the feature to limit your onscreen time on the app. This will allow the user to stop unintentionally reopening the app and continue refreshing the page for content.

  1. Great to see you use examples to back your approaches. This is a specific and focused area of work that needs to pay more attention in the modern days.
