Henry Dreyfuss, Charles and Ray Eames, Karl Gustner, and Ladislav Sutner all had some amazing contributions to the world of interaction design, and to people. They designed with people in mind, and managed to consider how people would act/ react to new things, how these things would be considered in the lives of their “users.” I wonder if I am capable of the same things they were capable of. After some time in the interaction design program I think about objects differently. My ability to not think about the shape of the door handle and what it affords is gone. I can no longer just leave that thought alone. Then again I think Henry Dreyfuss would tell me that I don’t need to reinvent the wheel to become a broad thinker. He tuned himself to thinking outwardly and that motivated him to conduct research and implement experiments to find the answer. Thinking broadly is not something you do over-night, it’s a personal process that you build on.
