The Legacy of our Predecessors

The techniques used by Eames, Gerstner and Sutnar are all different fields. The Eames were a partnership and helped each other fill in for their individual mistakes. If one made a mistake, the other would point it out and make sure their ideas are on the right track. In present day, we would consider their partnership and reviewing of their designs task flows and concept maps. As an interaction designer, it is important to stay on track and make sure the final product is completed in the right order.

While Eames were industrial designers, Sutnar was a graphic designer. Sutnar’s ideology is the foundation of current interaction design philosopghy for some people. The job of many interaction designers is to make the user and consumer have a simpler and easier experience whether it be in website design or product design. Sutnar thought about the user very often and made sure he understood how they view complicated information. Just like Eames, Sutnar was a focal point in design language and communication.

Karl Gerstner, a typographic designer, was very different from the both Eames and Sutnar. Instead of making the lives of his users easier, he focused more on the aspect of flexibility for the wider audience.

Henry Dreyfuss, a industrial designer of the 20th century, had a very insightful philosophy on design. He believed that design should make sure that the user is safe and productive. Just like Eames and Gerstner, Henry Dreyfuss wanted to put human above all and make sure people take care of themselves.

When doing research on the accomplishments that Dreyfuss have made, I am now aware that as interaction designers, we must make sure that we can have a good and reliable product for our user. Ergonomic design is a very important factor whether it be a mouse, keyboard, or office chair. The other day, I started having back issues because of my ample amount of time on the computer and a bad chair. After switching to an ergonomic chair, my back issues have faded away. Thanks to Dreyfuss’s idea of pushing for designing for people, I’m able to have comfort for long homework sessions.
