Doug Englebart and his team demonstrated the oN-Line System, which featured many of the elements prevalent in modern computing, including the use of a mouse and keyboard for efficient navigation and input, video-conferencing, multiple windows, and collaborative work functions. Engelbart’s vision was to shift the focus from the computer to the user, which is the most important idea in interaction design. This presentation practically demonstrated almost all the fundamental elements of modern personal computing: windows, graphics, efficient navigation and command input, video conferencing, the computer mouse, word processing, revision control, and a collaborative real-time editor.
Engelbart’s presentation was the first to demonstrate all of these elements in a single system publicly. The underlying technologies influenced both the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows graphical user interface operating systems in the 1980s and 1990s.
Human-oriented is important for interaction design. I totally agree with your idea.
I agree. I think “Engelbart’s vision was to shift the focus from the computer to the user” was a necessary step to today’s digital human-centered design products.
