From “The Mother of All Demos” to interaction design

Douglas Engelbart presented a landmark computer demonstration called “The Mother of All Demos” on December 9, 1968. He introduced a complete computer system that includes both hardware and software in this demo. A lot of fundamental elements for a computer can be found in this demo such as windows, computer mouse, word processing, hypertext, and the predecessor of the graphic user interface. This demo is the first one that combines all these fundamental elements in one system. Most of the technologies in this demo are widely used now. He and his team have made great contributions to the development of graphic user interface and interaction design. Douglas Engelbart had assembled a team of computer engineers and programmers at Stanford University. His idea is to make computing no longer just deal with numbers but to become a tool for communication and retrieval of information.

All this great achievement made by Douglas Engelbart has profoundly affected the development of graphical user interface operating systems. Also makes the computer is not only a number calculator, but also to augment the capabilities of the human mind, which makes human-computer interaction appears in the future.

  1. Thanks for sharing! It’s interesting that Douglas Engelbart’s idea is to make computing no longer just deal with numbers but to become a tool for communication and retrieval of information.
