From Mouse to Meeting: How Engelbart’s Demo Changed Our Workday

The demo by Douglas Engelbart and the team at SRI invented a series of machines that weren’t even on the market before. The demo included:

  • Advanced technology that still exists today.
  • The computer mouse.
  • Graphical user interface (GUI).
  • Video conferencing.
  • Collaborative editing tools.

It set a grounding stone for what is possible for computing in the future.

Also, this demo was publicly shown; people can access the demo video. Computing used to be scientific paper use, kept from the public. The machine aims to market working professionals. Hence, the computing machine users shift from scientists to working professionals more publicly.

Last but not least, the new technologies include a computer display, a mouse, and a trackpad. It could all work together as a whole system. And some sublevels of feature systems, such as user documents, proposals, and contracts. It would all be stored in the ARC Journal system, and the users’ discussion within the system could be documented as well.
