From Machines to Humanity: Lucy Suchman’s Impact on Designing Technology with People in Mind

Lucy Suchman change the way we understand technology we design because her works beliefs in understanding technology in social and cultural contexts. In other words, there is a link between technology and human-beings. Before her belief, people aren’t making connection between the two, not to mention design device that really work for people. She comes from a distinct background at her time when other so-called designers today, used to be engineers. Her background established a more human-interaction approach when she worked with machine, and think about the person who uses the machine, rather than the machine or technology alone.

Since she understands the machine system is not exactly same as the human system. Lucy Suchman tried to build a easier path for both concepts to communicate effective, so she also encourages human interaction design approaches by multiple testings with the concept by working closely with users and tech people to understand the needs. She applied design process to be able to effective enough in a real-world scenario. It allowed her to prototype her ideas, design for multiple rounds.
