Gestalt Principles & Fitts’s Law in Modern UX design

Learning about Gestalt principles has made me realize more about becoming a better logical thinker regarding graphic design. The Law of Proximity stresses grouping objects to help users understand the content. It so does The Law of Similarity, which groups similar colors, ideas, and shapes together to make the human eye easier to comprehend. The Law of Closure tells us how vision could be perceived as incomplete to complete state. When the Law of Common Fate uses animation to group elements together as if they share similar traits. The Law of Past Experiences implied modern system design while reusing early design for later design.

Fitts’s Law is often used in interactive design related to the relationship between the human eye and the rest of the canvas. There are two different situations in the law which align with real-life situations. When users need a quick way-finding, they need to pay extra attention to the critical content. In the first secrisco, the cursor should be as close as possible to the target. However, in another case, it should be grouped similarly, but finding out is not easy. In this way, users need to check if the information is correct.

All in all, learning Gestalt Principles & Fitts’s Law taught us design is not just being pretty and the most efficient interaction it doesn’t mean a better user experience design.
