This field trip was to a design museum, with the theme centered on design and peace. An interesting exhibit was a game called “Papers, Please” by independent game developer Lucas Pope. The game narrates the story of a border inspector (the player) who verifies the documents of each person wishing to cross the border, determining whether their papers are correct or forged. This game presents a dystopian view, where the player, as an inspector, wields significant power to scrutinize individuals’ documents and privacy. It also explores the relationship between individuals and society, highlighting that such power is institutionally derived. While the player holds authority as an inspector, this role is transient, with new inspectors ready to take their place, thus reflecting on the societal roles individuals occupy. The game also introduces various entrants that elicit empathy but do not meet the requirements, prompting a reflection on humanity and rules.
