When we ask if a technology “works,” we usually consider functionality: does the application load quickly? Did the robot perform the task? But anthropologist and human-computer interaction scholar Lucy Suchman challenges this narrow view, insisting that human behavior is situational – in other words, improvised and real-time – and influenced by environmental, cultural, and other contingencies or uncontrollable factors. Like the photocopier we saw earlier, when it comes to real human beings, there are actually unexpected results. This also shows women’s subtle observation and intuition of things.
