The Mother of All Demos

Douglas Engelbart’s was known as The Mother of All Demos, his 1968 demonstration reshaped the future of computing. Computers was like a complex number-crunching machines before this event, but Engelbart and his team at SRI introduced concepts such as the computer mouse, hypertext, graphical user interfaces, etc. His works was not just about improving machines, but about augmenting human intellect, making computers tools for creativity, problem-solving, and communication. The demo also marked a shift from processing to real-time interaction, and it layed the foundation for modern computing experiences like Google Docs, Zoom. Many of the features he showed such as layered windows and redo remain central to user interface design today. This demo demonstrated how innovation and teamwork can push progress, and prove computers could be interactive, user-friendly, and essential to everyday life. It’s incredible to know that so much of what we have in today’s digital world can be traced back to this event. This make Engelbart one of the most influential figures in computing history.
